Coloured SEM of head of an earthworm
Common earthworm. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a common earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris). At the tip of the head, at upper centre, is the mouth. The individual body segments can clearly be distinguished. Clearly visible are the tiny thorn like projections along the back which aid movement. Adult common earthworms can grow up to 30cm in length. Their diet consists of organic substances in the soil. They aid the regeneration of mineral supplies, and their movement helps to break up the soil and improve aeration. They are thus vital to the regeneration of arable soils. Magnification: x13 at 7x5 cm size. Magnification: x32.5 at 7x5ins size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a common earthworm's head, captured through a colored scanning electron microscope (SEM). At the center top of the image, we can observe its mouth, serving as an entry point for sustenance. The distinct body segments are clearly visible, each contributing to the worm's flexibility and movement. Along its back, tiny thorn-like projections aid in locomotion. Common earthworms play a crucial role in our ecosystem. Growing up to 30cm in length, these remarkable creatures primarily feed on organic substances found within the soil. Their presence is vital for mineral regeneration and improving soil quality by breaking it down and enhancing aeration. The magnification used for this SEM image is x13 at 7x5 cm size or x32.5 at 7x5 inches size – allowing us to appreciate even the smallest features of this fascinating annelid worm species called Lumbricus terrestris. By studying such detailed images like this one from Science Photo Library, scientists gain valuable insights into nature's wonders and deepen our understanding of these essential invertebrates' contributions to wildlife preservation and arable soil regeneration.
