EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork showcases the tragic story of conjoined twins, Radica and Doodica. Born in Orissa, India in 1888, these sisters were inseparably joined at the chest. Their lives took an unexpected turn when a showman purchased them from their parents and exhibited them across Europe. The image captures the essence of curiosity surrounding human biology and medicine during that era. Published in the renowned French popular science weekly La Science Illustree's 11th volume of 1893, this monochrome illustration sheds light on the unique existence of these two young girls. Despite their fame as a duo attraction, fate dealt them a cruel hand. In 1902, Doodica fell victim to tuberculosis, prompting doctors to attempt a separation surgery. Tragically, she did not survive the procedure. The following year brought further sorrow when Radica also succumbed to tuberculosis. This historical photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both the medical advancements made since then and society's evolving perception towards individuals with physical differences. It is through such glimpses into our past that we can reflect upon our progress while honoring those who faced extraordinary challenges. As we contemplate this artwork from Science Photo Library's collection, let us remember Radica and Doodica as symbols of resilience amidst adversity - forever etched in history as conjoined twins whose lives touched hearts around the world but ended far too soon.
