Gustavus Brander, British naturalist C016 / 5303

Gustavus Brander (1720-1787), British naturalist. Brander, from a Swedish family, was a trustee of the British Museum from 1761. He was also a Director of the Bank of England (1761 to 1779) and Fellow of the Royal Society (1754). He is holding the type specimen of the sea snail Strombus amplus (later: Hippochrenes amplus). The writing on the shell (Foss. Hant. Fig. 76) refers to Branders book Fossilia Hantoniensia collecta, et in Museo Britannico deposita (1766). At lower left are ancient coins, with fossils found by Brander in cliffs along the coast of Hampshire. This portrait, by Nathaniel Dance (1735-1811), dates from the 1770s
