Photographic Print : Model of reovirus particle
Photo Prints from Science Photo Library
Model of reovirus particle
Structural model of a rhabdovirus particle, the virus causing rabies. The rabies virus is bullet- shaped, 75-80 nanometres in diameter & around 200 nanometres in length. The helical nucleocapsid contains single-stranded RNA. Surrounding the nucleocapsid is a lipoprotein envelope that is studded with short projections. Rabies (hydrophobia) is usually transmitted to humans through dog bites. Symptoms of fever, malaise, salivation, and throat spasms, appear after an incubation period ranging from 10 days to one year. In the late stages, even the sight of water may induce convulsions & paralysis. Death occurs within a few days

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed model of the reovirus particle, specifically representing the rhabdovirus responsible for causing rabies. The bullet-shaped structure measures approximately 75-80 nanometres in diameter and spans around 200 nanometres in length. At its core lies a helical nucleocapsid housing single-stranded RNA, while surrounding it is a lipoprotein envelope adorned with short projections. Rabies, also known as hydrophobia due to its characteristic aversion to water, primarily spreads to humans through dog bites. After an incubation period ranging from 10 days to one year, individuals begin experiencing symptoms such as fever, malaise, excessive salivation, and throat spasms. As the disease progresses into its later stages, even the mere sight of water can trigger convulsions and paralysis. Tragically, death typically occurs within just a few days after these severe symptoms manifest themselves. This chilling visual representation serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences that this viral infection can have on both animals and humans alike. Displayed by Science Photo Library without any commercial intent or affiliation with any company bearing this name; this photograph allows us to marvel at the intricate structure of the rabies virus while simultaneously raising awareness about its grave implications for public health worldwide.
