Phobos 2 spacecraft photo of Martian moon Phobos

Combined optical & near infrared image of the Martian moon Phobos, seen against the background of the red Martian surface. The image was recorded by the 3-channel TV camera (VSK Fregat) on board the Soviet Phobos 2 spacecraft. Phobos is the innermost & larger of the two Martian satellites. It is roughly ellipsoidal in shape & measures 19 x 21 x 27 km. It orbits Mars every 7.65 hours & is located some 9380 km above the Martian surface. The two Phobos spacecraft were launched in July 1988. Contact with Phobos 1 was lost en route to Mars in October 1988, due to a controller error. Phobos 2 orbited Mars for 57 days before succumbing to computer failure in March 1989

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic Martian moon, Phobos, as captured by the Phobos 2 spacecraft. The combined optical and near-infrared image beautifully portrays Phobos against the backdrop of Mars' striking red surface. With its ellipsoidal shape measuring approximately 19 x 21 x 27 km, Phobos is not only larger but also closer to Mars compared to its sibling satellite. Orbiting Mars every 7.65 hours at a distance of about 9380 km above the planet's surface, Phobos holds an intriguing allure for scientists and astronomers alike. This remarkable photograph was recorded by the advanced three-channel TV camera (VSK Fregat) aboard the Soviet spacecraft. The mission itself was not without challenges; unfortunately, contact with Phobos 1 was lost due to a controller error during its journey towards Mars in October 1988. However, despite this setback, Phobos 2 successfully orbited around Mars for an impressive span of 57 days before succumbing to computer failure in March 1989. As we gaze upon this extraordinary image from Science Photo Library's collection on science, astronomy, and cosmology, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our home planet. It serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and technological advancements that have allowed us glimpses into distant celestial bodies like never before.
