EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a crucial moment in the history of American agriculture. Taken in March 1943 by renowned US photographer Jack Delano, it showcases a worker diligently loading crates of oranges into a refrigerator railway car at a co-operative orange packing factory in Redlands, California. The image reveals the intricate process of preserving citrus fruits during transportation. The ice-bunker reefer car, operated by the Santa Fe Railroad (ATSF), stands as an impressive testament to early refrigeration technology. Blocks of ice can be seen stored in the end compartments behind the neatly stacked crates. Chilled air circulates through slats in the floor, ensuring that these precious cargo remains cool and fresh throughout their journey. The Sunkist Growers co-operative, which originated in the late 19th century, played a vital role in establishing California's prominence as an orange-growing region. This photograph not only highlights their significant contribution but also sheds light on everyday American life during this era. With its historical significance and industrial charm, this print transports us back to a time when manual labor was essential for agricultural production. It serves as a reminder of our nation's rich farming heritage and pays tribute to hardworking individuals who dedicated themselves to feeding America with quality produce. This remarkable image is part of a larger collection commissioned by the US government between 1935 and 1944 to document various aspects of American life. Preserved meticulously by Library of Congress/Science Photo Library, it continues to captivate viewers with its timeless beauty and narrative power.
