Richard Owen (1804-1892), British anatomist and palaeontologist. Owen was the founder and first director of the Natural History Museum, London, UK. Owen became an expert in comparative anatomy and did extensive research on fossils and dinosaurs. He was initially bitterly opposed to Darwins theory of evolution through natural selection, but subsequently changed his views as Darwins ideas became widely accepted. Owen was knighted in 1884.
