SEM of the beef tapeworm

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head (scolex) and neck of the beef tapeworm, Taenia saginata, a parasite of the human intestine. T. saginata is the commonest tapeworm parasite in humans, varying in length from 4-10 metres. Its larval stage develops within the muscles of cattle, and humans are infected through eating raw or undercooked beef. The presence of the worm in intestines give rise to increased appetite, hunger pains, weight loss, and general weakness. Worms are expelled from intestines using antihelminthic drugs such as niclosamide and dichlorophen. Magnification: x15 at 6x7 cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a beef tapeworm, captured through a false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The image focuses on the head, known as the scolex, and neck region of this parasitic creature. Taenia saginata, commonly referred to as the beef tapeworm, is a notorious parasite that resides in the human intestine. Ranging from 4 to 10 meters in length, T. saginata is considered one of the most prevalent tapeworm parasites affecting humans worldwide. Its larval stage develops within cattle muscles and can be transmitted to humans through consumption of raw or undercooked beef. The presence of these worms in our intestines leads to various symptoms including increased appetite, hunger pains, weight loss, and general weakness. However, thanks to antihelminthic drugs such as niclosamide and dichlorophen, these unwelcome guests can be expelled from our bodies. This SEM image offers us an up-close look at this fascinating yet unsettling organism. With a magnification level of x15 at 6x7 cm size, it highlights the complexity and beauty found even within seemingly repulsive creatures like this beef tapeworm. Let's appreciate nature's diversity by exploring its wonders through scientific lenses like this remarkable photograph provided by Science Photo Library.
