Sir John Franklin, British explorer

Sir John Franklin (1786-1847), the British naval officer and Arctic explorer who died with his crew attempting to find the Northwest Passage. Franklin was born in Spilsby, Lincolnshire, and joined the navy at 14. In 1845, he set out in search of the Northwest Passage, a sea-route between Canada and the Arctic that links the Atlantic to the Pacific. He never returned. His mysterious disappearance led to the organisation of many more expeditions. In 1859, the ships remains and a record of the expedition were found.
