Photographic Print : Soay Sheep (Ovis aries)
Photo Prints from Science Photo Library
Soay Sheep (Ovis aries)
Ancient breed of sheep. They are descended from the first domesticated sheep of the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age farmers. Soay sheep originated in the island of Soay in the St. Kilda Archipelago. Their fleeces are hand- plucked in the spring or early summer so they have retained their ability to moult and do not need shearing. The colour of the wool varies from dark brown to light oatmeal. The gene for white wool is dominant. By selective in-breeding white fleeces are produced in four or five generations. By the Iron Age the normal colour of the wool was white

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Soay Sheep, an ancient breed that traces its lineage back to the Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Age farmers. Originating from the picturesque island of Soay in the St. Kilda Archipelago, these sheep have retained their ability to moult naturally due to their fleeces being hand-plucked during spring or early summer. Consequently, they do not require shearing. The wool of these extraordinary creatures displays a stunning range of colors, ranging from deep brown hues to light oatmeal shades. Interestingly, white wool is dominant among them due to selective in-breeding over four or five generations by our ancestors during the Iron Age. This image offers a glimpse into the genetic engineering practices employed by early agricultural societies as they selectively bred Soay Sheep for specific traits such as white fleeces. It serves as a testament to humanity's ingenuity and resourcefulness even in ancient times. Science Photo Library presents this mesmerizing photograph print that encapsulates both history and nature's wonders. It invites us to appreciate how our ancestors harnessed their knowledge of genetics and agriculture centuries ago while marveling at the beauty of these unique animals.
