Soyuz spacecraft in Earth orbit, artwork

Soyuz spacecraft in Earth orbit. Artwork of a Soyuz TMA-M spacecraft at sunset over the Atlantic Ocean at an orbital altitude of 320 kilometres. North is at right, with city lights in South America (upper left) and Africa and Europe (lower right). The Russian Soyuz TMA-M (crew of three) is a modified version of the Soyuz TMA spacecraft. It has been in use since 2010, carrying astronauts into Earth orbit. Since the last Space Shuttle flight in 2011, the Soyuz spacecraft has been the only one capable of ferrying crew to and from the International Space Station (ISS). A Soyuz replacement rocket and capsule is planned to be in operation by 2020

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the Soyuz spacecraft in Earth orbit, showcasing its remarkable presence against the backdrop of a stunning sunset over the Atlantic Ocean. The Soyuz TMA-M, a modified version of the renowned Soyuz TMA spacecraft, is depicted gracefully floating at an orbital altitude of 320 kilometers. With North positioned on the right side of the image, one can observe city lights illuminating South America in the upper left corner and Africa and Europe in the lower right. Since its introduction in 2010, this reliable Russian spacecraft has been instrumental in transporting astronauts to and from Earth's orbit. Following the retirement of NASA's Space Shuttle program in 2011, Soyuz became humanity's sole means of reaching and returning from the International Space Station (ISS). However, plans are underway to introduce a new rocket and capsule by 2020 as a replacement for this iconic vehicle. The artwork beautifully highlights not only our technological advancements but also our ability to explore space beyond our planet. As solar panels glisten under sunlight while orbiting around Earth, it serves as a reminder that we rely on innovative technologies like photovoltaics for sustainable power generation even amidst celestial journeys. Walter Myers' creation offers us an awe-inspiring glimpse into human spaceflight achievements during this era. It symbolizes both our fascination with outer space and our continuous pursuit of scientific progress within aerospace exploration.
