EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken on August 24,1946, we witness a historic moment as the first direct air route between Britain and Hong Kong is inaugurated. At dawn today, one of BOAC's latest Hythe flying boats embarks on its journey from Poole Harbour to Hong Kong. The flight will cover an impressive distance of 8352 miles in just over three days, with stops at Marseilles, Augusta, Rangoon, and Bangkok along the way. Aboard this pioneering Dragon service are sixteen passengers who have the privilege of being part of this remarkable milestone in aviation history. As they taxi out onto the water surface before taking off into the skies towards their destination thousands of miles away, a sense of excitement fills the air. This monochrome image captures both landscape and portrait elements flawlessly. The majestic Hazlemere flying boat stands tall against the backdrop of Poole Harbour at daybreak. Its sleek design exudes elegance and power as it prepares for its groundbreaking voyage. Although initially operating once weekly, plans are already underway to increase frequency to twice-weekly flights while also extending routes to Shanghai and Tokyo. This photograph serves as a timeless reminder of how far air travel has come since that significant day in 1946 when British Airways Overseas Corporation (BOAC) connected two distant corners of our world through their Dragon service.
