EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Louis Antoine de Bougainville, a remarkable figure in French history. Born in 1729, Bougainville was not only a soldier but also a skilled navigator and mathematician. His talents were recognized early on when he was elected as a fellow of the prestigious Royal Society in 1756 while serving as secretary to the French Embassy in London. Bougainville's military career flourished during the Seven Years War from 1756 to 1763, where he served with distinction as aide-de-camp to Montcalm in North America. However, his true passion lay beyond warfare. In 1764, he joined the French navy and went on to colonize the Falkland Islands (Iles Malouines) shortly after. In an extraordinary expedition lasting from 1766 to 1769, Bougainville led the first French circumnavigation of the globe. Accompanied by naturalists and other scientists, this voyage marked an important milestone in scientific exploration. Following the outbreak of the French Revolution, Bougainville dedicated himself wholeheartedly to science. His contributions were so significant that even nature itself pays tribute to him through various namesakes - one being the climber plant known as bougainvillea and another being Solomon Islands' largest island named after him. Louis Antoine de Bougainville's legacy lives on through his achievements both at sea and within academia. This print serves as a testament to his multifaceted brilliance and enduring impact on history.
