EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print showcases the distinguished figure of David Stewart of Garth, a remarkable Scottish soldier and author. Born in 1772, Stewart's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to both military service and literary pursuits. Joining the renowned 42nd Highlanders in 1787, he displayed exceptional bravery on the battlefield but suffered severe injuries during the Battle of Alexandria (Aboukir) in 1801 when British forces triumphed over the French. Despite his physical setbacks, Stewart's determination propelled him forward. Rising through the ranks, he achieved the esteemed position of Major-General in 1825 while concurrently serving as Governor of St Lucia. However, it is his written legacy that truly immortalizes him. In his seminal work "Sketches. . . of the Highlanders of Scotland: with Details of the Military Service of Highland Regiments" published in 1822, Stewart provides an insightful account into Scottish culture and their military contributions. The engraving presented here captures a mature man with a dignified presence. His balding head adorned with spectacles speaks to wisdom acquired through experience. Clad in a resplendent military uniform, this portrait emanates authority and resilience. Originally featured in Thomas Thomson's "A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen" from 1870, this illustration preserves not only David Stewart's likeness but also pays homage to his significant contributions to history and literature alike.
