Joining the renowned 42nd Highlanders in 1787, he displayed exceptional bravery on the battlefield but suffered severe injuries during the Battle of Alexandria (Aboukir) in 1801 when British forces triumphed over the French. Despite his physical setbacks, Stewart's determination propelled him forward. Rising through the ranks, he achieved the esteemed position of Major-General in 1825 while concurrently serving as Governor of St Lucia. However, it is his written legacy that truly immortalizes him.
