Waterloo Station - Peace, SR poster, 1948
Poster produced for Southern Railways (SR). This is one of two posters commissioned as part of the celebrations that took place in 1948 to mark the centenary of the opening of Waterloo Station. The poster commemorates a centenary of uninterrupted service during war and peace'. Artwork by Helen McKie, who studied at the Lambeth School of Art and exhibited at the Paris Salon and at leading London galleries. In addition to designing posters for the Southern Railway (SR), she also wrote and illustrated booklets and other publicity material and designed uniforms and upholstery. In 1939 she was asked to decorate two new coaches for the cross-Channel service. Dimensions: 1016 mm x 1270mm

Skyport 2000
15th February 1957: An architect's model of Skyport 2000, a futuristic proposal for an airport building to stand in St George's Circus, near Waterloo Station, London in the year 2000. Made for the Glass Age Development Committee and designed by architect James Dartford, the model shows how aircraft could land and take off from a giant platform supported by three glass-clad pillars. These would contain lifts carrying passengers down to a hotel, offices, and parking for private planes and cars. (Photo by Keystone/Getty Images)
