13132558. Atlantic tripletail or tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis
Atlantic tripletail or tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis. Young fish floating on its side at surface on the mangrove. Young and older fish are well known for their unusual behavior of floating just beneath the surface with one side exposed, mimicking a leaf or floating debris. This is a feeding strategy because of the locality of their prey items and the floating structures associated with this behaviou r. They use the same strategy for defence mimic dead leaves drifting amongst flotsam at the surface or moving along the bottom with the current. Juvenile Atlantic tripletails are colored a mottled yellow, brown, and black. Adults are jet black. When it lies on its side at the surface, the tripletail is easily confused for a floating mangrove leaf. Caribbean Date

EDITORS COMMENTS
Leaf or Fish? The Atlantic Tripletail's Clever Camouflage!". In this incredible snapshot captured by Mary Evans Picture Library, we witness the mesmerizing behavior of the Atlantic tripletail. Floating on its side at the surface of a mangrove, this young fish perfectly mimics a leaf or floating debris with one side exposed. Talk about an ingenious disguise! But why do they do it? Well, it turns out that this is not just a fashion statement for our finned friend. It's actually a clever feeding strategy! By blending in with their surroundings, these crafty creatures can easily snatch up prey items that are attracted to the floating structures nearby. And if you think that's impressive, wait till you hear about their defense tactics! When threatened, these colorful characters take on yet another role - dead leaves drifting amongst flotsam at the surface or gracefully moving along the bottom with the current. It's like watching Mother Nature's very own spy movie! With their mottled yellow, brown, and black coloring as juveniles and jet black hue as adults, it's no wonder they're often mistaken for floating mangrove leaves. So next time you're strolling along a tropical shoreline and spot what appears to be foliage bobbing in the water. . . look closer! You might just have stumbled upon an Atlantic tripletail playing hide-and-seek beneath its leafy disguise. Remember folks: nature never ceases to amaze us with its endless wonders!
