13132564. Shortfin mako shark, Isurus oxirinchus, biting the bait

Shortfin mako shark, Isurus oxirinchus, biting the bait. Is on record as the fastest-swimming shark, capable of bursts of speed up to 18.8 metres per second (68 km/h) allowing it to jump to heights of approximately 9 m. These characteristics have made the shortfin mako a highly sought-after game fish worldwide. Some cases of shortfin mako jumping into a boat after having been hooked have been reported. Of all studied sharks, the shortfin mako has one of the largest brain:body ratios. From tests involving shape differentiation to electroreception tests and individual recognition, mako are fast-learning sharks. They do not rely on electroreception when hunting, instead, they rely on smell, hearing, and most prominently, vision. Mako is regularly blamed for attacks on humans and, due to its speed, power, and size, it is certainly capable of injuring and killing people. However, this species will not generally attack humans and does not seem to treat them as prey. Most modern attacks involving shortfin mako sharks are considered to have been provoked due to harassment or the shark being caught on a fishing line. Azores, Portugal Date

Shark Speed Demon Takes a Bite Out of Bait and Our Hearts!

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this jaw-dropping photo, the shortfin mako shark proves why it's known as the fastest swimmer in the ocean. With its razor-sharp teeth sinking into the bait, this incredible creature showcases its power and agility. Not only can this speedster reach bursts of up to 18.8 meters per second, but it can also leap to astonishing heights of approximately 9 meters! Talk about making a splash! But don't let its impressive skills fool you – despite being blamed for attacks on humans, the shortfin mako doesn't see us as tasty treats. Instead, it relies on smell, hearing, and especially vision when hunting. With one of the largest brain-to-body ratios among sharks, these fast learners are always up for a challenge. From shape differentiation tests to individual recognition experiments, they're constantly proving their intelligence. And while some cases have been reported where makos jumped right into boats after getting hooked on fishing lines (oops!), we can't help but admire their tenacity and determination. So next time you find yourself in Azores, Portugal with your fishing gear ready, keep an eye out for these magnificent creatures. Just remember to give them some space – they may be powerful predators but they prefer fishy feasts over human hors d'oeuvres!
