QRA Scramble to Intercept Russian Blackjack Aircraft
A Russian TU-160 Blackjack aircraft is escorted by a Tornado F3.
On 10th March 2010, two RAF Tornado F3 fighter aircraft of 111(Fighter) Squadron were scrambled from RAF Leuchars (Fife) in the early hours of the morning to intercept two Russian TU-160 Blackjack aircraft, which were approx 100nm to the west of Stornaway on the North-West coast of Scotland.
The Tornadoes shadowed the Russian aircraft as they progressed south before the Blackjacks turned north, short of the Northern Irish coast, exiting UK airspace.
RAF Leuchars fighters have successfully scrambled to intercept Russian aircraft on more than 20 occasions since the start of 2009. The Tornado F3 is planned to go out of RAF Service in 2011; RAF Leuchars will become the RAFs second Typhoon fighter base later this year

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a moment of high tension and quick reaction as two RAF Tornado F3 fighter aircraft scramble to intercept a Russian TU-160 Blackjack aircraft. The scene unfolds against the stunning backdrop of a vibrant sunrise or sunset, casting an ethereal glow on the silhouette of these powerful machines. On that fateful day of March 10th, 2010, the peace and tranquility of Scotland's North-West coast were disrupted by the presence of these foreign intruders. The Tornadoes took off from RAF Leuchars in haste, their mission clear: shadow the Russian Blackjacks and ensure they do not breach UK airspace. As if engaged in an aerial dance, the fighters trailed behind their targets as they headed southward. But just before reaching Northern Irish waters, with precision timing reminiscent of a well-choreographed performance, the Blackjacks abruptly changed course and turned northwards. They swiftly exited UK airspace like elusive phantoms disappearing into thin air. This incident marked yet another successful interception for RAF Leuchars fighters who have been called upon more than 20 times since 2009 to defend British skies against potential threats from Russia. However, it also serves as a poignant reminder that change is imminent; soon these trusty Tornado F3s will retire from service in 2011. As darkness gives way to dawn or dusk illuminates their path forward, this print encapsulates both the defensive nature and unwavering determination exhibited by Royal Air Force personnel in safeguarding our skies.
