EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful photo captures the poignant moment when an RAF Chinook helicopter is being loaded into a C-17 Globe master, signaling the end of its mission in Afghanistan. After thirteen years of unwavering support to operations in the country, this was the first of three remaining Royal Air Force Chinooks departing Kabul for their long journey back home to the UK. Since combat operations ceased in October 2014, these three helicopters had stayed behind to assist British troops in non-combat roles. However, March 2015 marked their return as they bid farewell to Afghanistan. In the early hours of Wednesday 25th March, RAF Odiham's heavy lift support helicopter took its place on board the C-17 aircraft, symbolizing the conclusion of UK Chinook Forces' contribution to Afghan operations. The image serves as a reminder of how synonymous these mighty machines have become with Afghanistan over the past thirteen years. The Chinook Force has tirelessly flown over 41,000 hours and successfully extracted 13,000 casualties during their service. Their bravery has not gone unnoticed either; their crews have been honored with numerous gallantry awards including twenty-three distinguished flying crosses for acts of heroism in the air. As this print encapsulates both triumph and nostalgia simultaneously, it stands as a tribute to all those who served and sacrificed during this significant chapter in military history.
