EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of two remarkable amphibians - the fire salamander and the critically endangered great crested newt. The image, captured by Corsi in the 19th century, is a handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving from Antoine Laurent de Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali (Dictionary of Natural Science), published in Florence, Italy in 1837. The fire salamander, scientifically known as Salamandra salamandra, is a striking creature with its contrasting black body adorned with vibrant yellow or orange markings. Its unique appearance has made it an object of fascination for centuries. Alongside it stands the great crested newt, Triturus cristatus, which unfortunately finds itself on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss and pollution. The illustration was meticulously drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin - one of France's most esteemed botanical illustrators during that era. Turpin's attention to detail brings these creatures to life on paper. As we admire this artwork today, let us reflect on our responsibility to protect these delicate species and their habitats. The juxtaposition between the common fire salamander and its critically endangered counterpart serves as a reminder that nature's wonders are not invincible against human impact. May this image inspire us all to appreciate and safeguard our natural world for generations to come.
