The Battle of Aliwal was fought during the 1st Sikh War (1845-1846) between a force of 10, 000 British and Indian troops under the command of General Sir Harry Smith and a 15, 0000 strong Sikh army led by Ranjur Singh. The Sikh forces occupied an entrenched position between the villages of Aliwal and Bhundri, close to the River Sutlej. Aliwal, 28th Jan 1846A - A Glimpse into the Fierce Battle of Aliwal

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the historic Battle of Aliwal, fought on January 28th, 1846. Depicting a coloured lithograph by Laby and Ogg after C B Spalding, this image offers a vivid portrayal of the intense clash between British and Indian troops under General Sir Harry Smith's command and the formidable Sikh army led by Ranjur Singh. The battle unfolded near the villages of Aliwal and Bhundri, strategically positioned along the River Sutlej. With an entrenched position occupied by their Sikh adversaries, General Smith devised a brilliant plan to dislodge them. The British forces launched a relentless assault that saw infantry units storming through Aliwal while cavalry and artillery support rolled up the Sikh line. Notably, it was during this fierce encounter that we witness the valiant charge of the 16th Lancers multiple times throughout the battle. Their fearless actions shattered several Sikh infantry squares and even overran a battery of enemy artillery. This remarkable artwork not only captures key moments from this significant conflict but also highlights various military tactics employed during such engagements. As we delve into history through this image from Fine Art Finder in collaboration with Bridgeman Images, we are reminded of both bravery and sacrifice exhibited by soldiers on both sides as they fought for their respective causes in one of India's most pivotal battles.
