EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures a pivotal moment in history as Bajidaw, King of Burma, orders his General to wrest Bengal from the British in 1823. The tension and drama of this scene are palpable as the fate of nations hangs in the balance. Lord Amherst, Governor-General of India at the time, received a bold demand from Bajidaw for the cession of Bengal. This audacious move led to the dispatch of an army under Maha Bandula's command with orders to bring Lord Amherst bound in golden fetters back to Burma. The ensuing conflict became known as the First Burmese War (1824-1826) and resulted in significant territorial changes with Assam, Arakan, and Tenasserim being annexed by the British. The power struggle between empires is vividly depicted in this illustration for Hutchinson's History of Nations. The image has been digitally enhanced to preserve its historical significance and facilitate reproduction. It serves as a reminder of past conflicts and conquests that have shaped our world today. Through this artwork, we are transported back to a time when kingdoms clashed over land and power, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate through generations.
