EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Pierrepont House, a stunning architectural masterpiece located in Nottingham. Painted by an unknown English artist from the 18th century, this oil on canvas artwork measures 91.9x121.9 cm and is currently housed at the Yale Center for British Art as part of the Paul Mellon Collection in the USA. Originally attributed to Leonard Knyff, Pierrepont House was built during the early 16th century and stands as one of Nottinghamshire's earliest brick buildings. The house belonged to the Earls of Kingston and features prominently in this painting, with St Mary's church tower visible to its left. The hall itself was constructed by Sir William Pierrepont around 1500 but underwent renovations over time. In 1628, Sir Robert Pierrepont rebuilt the north range of the house before his son Henry Pierrepont became Marquess of Dorchester in 1645. The image captures not only Holme Pierrepont Hall's courtyard house but also highlights its formal walled garden adorned with sculptures, urns, and steps leading visitors through a sunken garden towards raised terraces and a meticulously planned parterre. Topiaries add elegance while vibrant flowers fill vases and pots throughout this enchanting English landscape. Immerse yourself in England's rich history as you explore every intricate detail within this extraordinary piece of art that beautifully encapsulates both grandeur and serenity.
