Natural stone circles caused by cryoturbation (aka frost churning), Arctic desert habitat, Palanderbukta (Palander Bay) Zeipelodden, Nordaustlandet, Svalbard, Norway

In gelisols (permafrost soils), cryoturbation (frost churning) refers to the mixing of materials from various horizons of the soil down to the bedrock due to freezing and thawing. Cryoturbation occurs to varying degrees in most gelisols. The cause of cryoturbation lies in the way in which the repeated freezing of the soil during autumn causes the formation of ice wedges at the most easily erodible parts of the parent rock. If the parent rock is hard, this can cause quite deep erosion of the rock over many years. As this process continues, during the summer when an active layer forms in the soil this eroded material can easily move both from the soil surface downward and from the permafrost table upward

Discover the breathtaking beauty of the Arctic desert with this stunning poster print from Media Storehouse's Fine Art collection. Featuring an awe-inspiring image by Danita Delimont, this poster showcases natural stone circles formed by cryoturbation, or frost churning, in Palanderbukta (Palander Bay) on Zeipelodden, Nordaustlandet, Svalbard, Norway. This unique geological phenomenon occurs in permafrost soils, where the freezing and thawing process mixes materials from various soil horizons down to the bedrock. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing natural stone circles formed by cryoturbation, also known as frost churning, in the Arctic desert habitat of Palanderbukta (Palander Bay) Zeipelodden, Nordaustlandet, Svalbard, Norway. In gelisols or permafrost soils, cryoturbation refers to the mixing of materials from different layers of soil down to the bedrock due to freezing and thawing processes. The image showcases the stunning result of this geological phenomenon that occurs to varying degrees in most gelisols. The repeated freezing during autumn leads to ice wedges forming at vulnerable parts of the parent rock. Over time, these ice wedges cause significant erosion on hard rocks. As a result, when an active layer forms during summer months, eroded material can easily move both upwards from the permafrost table and downwards from the soil surface. With no human presence in sight against a backdrop of overcast skies and snow-covered terrain, this photograph beautifully encapsulates nature's intricate processes at work. It serves as a reminder of how even seemingly harsh environments like Arctic deserts hold hidden wonders waiting to be discovered. Danita Delimont's masterful composition allows viewers to appreciate both the delicate beauty and immense power behind these naturally occurring stone circles caused by cryoturbation in Svalbard's remote wilderness.
