Birds, Trees, and Flowers, late 1500s. Creator: Kano Shoei (Japanese, 1519-1592), attributed to

Birds, Trees, and Flowers, late 1500s. Unhurried contemplation of these screens ( byobu ) reveals that their appearance differs slightly. Notice the shapes of the rocks and pine trunks. The actual ink lines defining their contours and the many brushstrokes providing textual definition to forms and surfaces show two distinct hands at work in the later decades of 16th-century Kyoto. Both Kano Shoei and Kano Mitsunobu were well known throughout the country for their skills. As masters of the Kano academic painting style, they naturally favored Chinese-inspired subject matter, such as birds and flowers, rendered in emphatic ink tonalities and placed within mountainous landscape settings. As can be seen in the byobu on the right, military class patrons frequently requested scenes depicting predation, such as hunting scenes that were inserted as additional subject matter in otherwise tranquil vistas celebrating flora and fauna

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Birds, Trees, and Flowers" takes us back to the late 1500s in Japan. Created by Kano Shoei, a renowned artist of that era, this masterpiece showcases the beauty of nature through an intricate composition of birds, trees, and flowers. Upon closer observation, one can notice slight variations in the appearance of the screens (byobu). The rocks and pine trunks are meticulously defined with ink lines and brushstrokes that reveal two distinct artistic styles from Kyoto during the later decades of the 16th century. Both Kano Shoei and Kano Mitsunobu were highly esteemed for their mastery of the Kano academic painting style. Inspired by Chinese art traditions, these skilled artists often depicted subjects like birds and flowers set against majestic mountain landscapes. However, it is interesting to note that military class patrons occasionally requested scenes depicting predation or hunting within these tranquil vistas celebrating flora and fauna. The print captures not only the visual appeal but also invites unhurried contemplation. It allows us to appreciate the craftsmanship involved in creating such detailed artwork while immersing ourselves in a serene ambiance filled with natural wonders. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has preserved this remarkable piece for generations to come so that we may continue to marvel at its timeless beauty and gain insight into Japan's rich artistic heritage from centuries past.
