Captain Scott Writing His Diary in the Hut at Cape Evans, c1911, (1914). Creator: Herbert Ponting

Captain Scott Writing His Diary in the Hut at Cape Evans, c1911, (1914). British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) writing in his quarters. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From " Bibbys Annual 1914", edited by Joseph Bibby. [J. Bibby & Sons, London, 1914]

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see Captain Robert Falcon Scott immersed in his thoughts as he diligently writes his diary in the hut at Cape Evans. The year is 1911, during the British Antarctic expedition, and Scott's face reflects a mix of determination and exhaustion. Accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, they had reached the South Pole on January 17th of 1912 only to discover that their Norwegian counterparts led by Amundsen had beaten them there a month earlier. The image captures a poignant moment frozen in time - a testament to Scott's unwavering commitment to documenting their arduous journey despite facing insurmountable challenges. As one of Britain's most renowned explorers, Scott's mission was not only scientific but also symbolic of national pride. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott and his team met their untimely demise at the end of March that same year. It would be eight months before their bodies were discovered alongside these very diaries - testaments to their courage and sacrifice. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of human resilience in the face of adversity. Herbert Ponting skillfully captured both the physical surroundings within the hut as well as the emotional weight carried by these brave men. Through this image from "Bibbys Annual 1914" we are transported back in time to witness an extraordinary chapter in history where triumph turned into tragedy amidst Antarctica's unforgiving landscape.
