EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports us back to the 15th century. This image is taken from "The Nuremberg Chronicle" a remarkable illustrated biblical paraphrase and world history compiled by Hartmann Schedel in Latin and translated into German by Georg Alt. The book features stunning illustrations created by renowned German artists Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, with the assistance of their studio apprentices, including the young prodigy Albrecht Durer. In this particular print, we are presented with the picturesque cityscape of Treviso, located in Northern Italy's Veneto region. The city sits atop a hillside, its aged rooftops painted in warm shades of brown. A magnificent carrack ship gracefully sails along the nearby waterways, symbolizing the importance of transportation during that era. This artwork not only showcases Treviso's beauty but also serves as an invaluable historical document. It provides insight into both geographical features and significant Western cities at that time. Edward Keble Chatterton's book "Old Ship Prints" introduces this mesmerizing piece to modern audiences while paying homage to centuries-old craftsmanship.
