Cunard Line - Fastest Steamers in the World, c1910s. Creator: Unknown

Cunard Line - Fastest Steamers in the World, c1910s. RMS Mauretania was built for the Cunard Line by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Wallsend on the Tyne in England. Launched in 1906, she operated on the transatlantic route to New York, holding the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing from 1909 until 1929. She served as a troopship during World War I, her speed enabling her to avoid falling prey to German u-boats. Mauretania was retired in 1934 after Cunard merged with the White Star Line and the 81, 000 ton Queen Mary entered service. The Mauretania was scrapped the following year. Postcard

EDITORS COMMENTS
Cunard Line - Fastest Steamers in the World, c1910s. This print showcases the iconic RMS Mauretania, a magnificent vessel built by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Wallsend on the Tyne in England. Launched in 1906, she swiftly became renowned for her remarkable speed and operated on the transatlantic route to New York. Holding the prestigious Blue Riband title from 1909 until 1929, Mauretania was truly a symbol of maritime excellence. During World War I, this majestic ship served as a troopship due to her exceptional speed which allowed her to evade German u-boats. Her contribution played a crucial role in ensuring safe transportation during those turbulent times. Sadly, after Cunard merged with the White Star Line and introduced their new flagship Queen Mary weighing an impressive 81,000 tons into service in 1934, Mauretania's retirement followed suit. The following year saw her being dismantled and scrapped. This vintage postcard captures not only the grandeur of Mauretania but also represents an era when steamships ruled over vast oceans as symbols of progress and human achievement. A true testament to engineering marvels and nautical prowess.
