EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the astonishing figure of Daniel Lambert, known for his remarkable corpulence in the early 19th century. Created by R Cooper in 1821, this portrait showcases Lambert's immense size and presence. Daniel Lambert, who served as the keeper of Leicester gaol, weighed a staggering 50 stone (320 kg) in 1805, making him the heaviest authenticated person in recorded history at that time. However, after the closure of the gaol, financial difficulties forced Lambert to exhibit himself in London to raise funds. Charging spectators for a chance to meet him allowed him to return to Leicester where he pursued his passion for breeding sporting dogs. The engraving is featured in "Wonderful Characters: Comprising Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Persons of Every Age and Nation" by Henry Wilson. This image not only highlights Lambert's physical appearance but also sheds light on societal attitudes towards obesity during this period. With its monochrome aesthetic and attention to detail, this photograph offers a glimpse into an extraordinary life lived against societal norms. It serves as a testament to Daniel Lambert's resilience amidst adversity while providing valuable historical insights into British culture during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
