EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic moment of "The death of Thom, alias Sir William Courtenay, Dunkirk, Kent, 1838". In this haunting image from Cassells Illustrated History of England, we are transported to a significant event in British history - the Battle of Bossenden Wood. Born in Cornwall, John Nichols Thom was a man who declared himself as the savior of the world. Known by various names such as Mad Tom and Sir William Percy Honeywood Courtenay of Powderham, he became an eccentric wandering preacher in Kent. His passionate speeches against tax laws gained him followers and notoriety. However, his story took a tragic turn on that fateful day - May 31st, 1838. Leading his devoted followers into battle against authority figures during the last conflict fought on British soil. The print shows Thom valiantly holding a rifle while leading his infantry amidst flags waving high above them. The intensity captured within this monochrome engraving is palpable; it reflects both the rebellion and insanity that characterized Thom's life. This image serves as a reminder of the turbulent times during Victorian-era Britain when individuals like Thom challenged societal norms and fought for their beliefs with fervor. As we gaze upon this historical artifact today, we are reminded not only of one man's demise but also how passion can drive people to extraordinary lengths - even if those actions ultimately lead to tragedy.
