Dolmen, Cap del Puetch, Ariege, France, c. 1865-1869. Creator: Arthur A. Taylor (French

Dolmen, Cap del Puetch, Ariege, France, c. 1865-1869. A British-born photographer, Taylor lived in Marseille and became a member of the Societe Francaise de Photographie in 1860. Taking photographs in city parks and the surrounding countryside, as well as in Ariege and Seine-et-Oise, he often worked with the establishment G. Arosa et Cie in Saint-Cloud to produce his ink-based prints made from photographs according to the publishers unique process. This print is likely made from a shellac base, for Taylor wrote several articles for British and American photographic journals on a shellac printing process in 1866 and 1867. After printing, the images would be mounted onto a heavy card stock and sold to be collected in albums. Here, the subject, a dolmen, or Neolithic tomb, reflects 19th-century interest in distant history and early monuments

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Dolmen, Cap del Puetch, Ariege, France" takes us back to the late 19th century. Created by Arthur A. Taylor, a British-born photographer who resided in Marseille and was a member of the Societe Francaise de Photographie, this image showcases his talent for capturing both natural landscapes and historical monuments. The dolmen featured in this photograph is an ancient Neolithic tomb that reflects the fascination with distant history prevalent during the 19th century. Taylor's choice to immortalize this early monument demonstrates his keen interest in preserving cultural heritage through photography. To produce this stunning print, Taylor collaborated with G. Arosa et Cie in Saint-Cloud using their unique ink-based process. It is likely that he utilized a shellac base for printing as he had previously written articles on a shellac printing process for photographic journals. Once printed onto waxed paper negatives using this specialized technique, these images would be mounted onto sturdy card stock and sold as collectible items or added to albums. This particular print now resides at The Cleveland Museum of Art thanks to Heritage Art/Heritage Images' preservation efforts. Through its exquisite composition and meticulous craftsmanship, this print transports viewers back in time while simultaneously highlighting the enduring beauty of France's ancient landmarks.
