Don Luis de Velasco (f. 1561-1571), also known as Paquiquino, c1910

Don Luis de Velasco (f.1561-1571), also known as Paquiquino, was a Native American, possibly of the Kiskiack or Paspahegh tribe, from Tidewater Virginia who in 1561 was taken by the Spanish to Cuba, Mexico, and Spain, where he was baptized as Don Luis de Velasco and educated. Don Luis returned in 1571 as a missionary to Virginia, where he apparently participated in the killing of the Jesuits who had accompanied him. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Don Luis de Velasco, also known as Paquiquino, a remarkable Native American figure from Tidewater Virginia. Born in the 16th century, Don Luis was taken by the Spanish to Cuba, Mexico, and Spain at a young age. There, he underwent baptism and received education under his new name - Don Luis de Velasco. Returning to Virginia in 1571 as a missionary, Don Luis's story takes an unexpected turn. It is believed that he played a role in the killing of the Jesuits who had accompanied him on this mission. This incident highlights the complexities of his journey and reflects the tensions between different religious beliefs during that era. The monochrome portrait captures Don Luis's dignified presence and showcases his distinctive attire which represents both his Native American heritage and Catholic faith. The image exudes an air of mystery surrounding this enigmatic character who navigated multiple cultures and identities throughout his life. This historic photograph serves as a reminder of the struggles faced by indigenous peoples during colonial times while also shedding light on their resilience and adaptability within changing societies. It stands as a testament to Don Luis de Velasco's unique place in history as both an ambassador for Christianity and someone entangled in rebellion against those who once welcomed him into their land.
