Embarkation of the Pilgrim Fathers, 1620 - A Journey Towards Freedom
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in history - the embarkation of the Pilgrim Fathers in 1620. Fleeing religious persecution, these brave members of the English Separatist Church sect of Puritans sought a new life in the New World. After enduring years of exile in the Netherlands, they made their way to Delft where they boarded two ships - the Speedwell and Mayflower. However, it soon became apparent that only one vessel could withstand the treacherous transatlantic voyage. Determined to reach their destination, all pilgrims set sail aboard the Mayflower from Plymouth. In this engraving, we witness men, women, and children kneeling together on deck as they offer prayers for a safe journey. Their faces reflect both hope and uncertainty as they leave behind their homeland for an unknown future across vast seas. The image showcases not just a physical departure but also an emotional one - leaving behind loved ones and familiar surroundings to establish a new colony based on freedom of religion. It symbolizes courage, determination, and resilience in pursuit of liberty. Today we remember these pioneers who landed in New England after 102 days at sea. Their legacy lives on as their story continues to inspire generations around the world seeking refuge or searching for opportunities beyond borders.
