EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of General Dalzell Entering Edinburgh in July 1666. Sir Thomas Dalyell of The Binns, a Scottish Royalist general known as Bluidy Tam and The Muscovite Devil, was appointed commander-in-chief in Scotland during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. His mission was to subdue the Covenanters, who he defeated at the Battle of Rullion Green in the Pentland Hills. However, it was his cruel treatment of the defeated that earned him his infamous nickname. This image is taken from British Battles on Land and Sea by James Grant, published around 1880 by Cassell Petter & Galpin. In this scene, we see General Dalzell arriving with his troops into Edinburgh. The atmosphere is tense as people gather to witness this significant event in Scottish history. Men, women, and children stand alongside each other, their expressions reflecting a mix of curiosity and apprehension. The photograph's monochrome aesthetic adds to its historical appeal while highlighting the somber mood surrounding General Dalzell's arrival. His bearded figure stands out among the crowd as he symbolizes power and authority during a time marked by political unrest. Despite being an unpopular figure due to his ruthless actions towards those he conquered, General Dalzell remains an important character in Scottish military history. This print serves as a reminder of both his controversial legacy and Scotland's turbulent past during the seventeenth century civil war era.
