EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases General George Meade, a distinguished US Army officer and civil engineer who played a crucial role in the American Civil War. The portrait, taken by renowned artist Brady, captures Meade's commanding presence and resolute demeanor. Throughout his military career from 1862 to 1867, General Meade fought valiantly for the Union states at significant battles such as Bull Run and Antietam. His exceptional leadership skills led to his promotion as major-general of volunteers after these engagements. He went on to lead troops at Fredericksburg and Chancellorville before being entrusted with command of the Army of the Potomac in 1863. One of Meade's most notable achievements came during the Battle of Gettysburg when he successfully defeated Confederate General Robert E Lee. However, despite this victory, he faced criticism for not fully capitalizing on his advantage. The black-and-white engraving featured here is sourced from volume III of "The War with the South: A History of the Late Rebellion". It beautifully encapsulates Meade's stoic expression while donning his military uniform adorned with badges denoting his rank. General George Gordon Meade remains an iconic figure in American history—a symbol of bravery and dedication to one's country during turbulent times.
