EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing print, titled 'Historical Aspects of Hampton Court; Edward VI. And the Protector Somerset- 'The Night Alarm'' from the January to June 1890 issue of The Graphic, an illustrated weekly newspaper, transports us back to the 16th century and the tumultuous reign of King Edward VI of England. The image depicts Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, riding on horseback through the night at Hampton Court Palace. The Duke, dressed in full armor and accompanied by armed soldiers, appears alert and focused, suggesting that he is on a mission. Edward Seymour, a powerful and influential figure during the minority of King Edward VI, served as Lord Protector of the realm from 1547 to 1549. However, his position was not without controversy. In 1549, a rebellion known as the Prayer Book Rebellion broke out in the west of England, sparked by opposition to the new liturgy introduced by the government. Seymour, in an attempt to quell the uprising, led a force of soldiers to suppress the rebellion. The print captures the tense atmosphere of the night as the Duke and his men make their way through the dimly lit corridors of Hampton Court Palace. The image is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the political intrigue and military strategy of the 16th century. The print also highlights the role of the press in shaping public opinion during the Victorian era, as The Graphic brought news and events to the masses through its weekly publications. Overall, this print is a captivating reminder of the rich history of Hampton Court Palace and the complex political landscape of the 16th century.
