EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stoic presence of Colonel Jose Ximenez de Sandoval, a significant figure in Cuban history. Born in Spain, he led the Spanish column that fought in Two Rivers (Dos Rios), where the renowned Cuban patriot Jose Marti tragically lost his life on May 19th, 1895. The image dates back to the 1920s when Colonel Sandoval paid his respects during Marti's burial ceremony in Santiago de Cuba on May 27th. In this portrait, Colonel Sandoval exudes an air of authority and determination. His neatly groomed mustache adds to his commanding appearance as he dons a distinguished hat and wears military attire. The monochrome aesthetic enhances the gravity of his role as a key player in this pivotal moment of Cuban history. The photograph also offers insight into the fashion trends and style prevalent during that era with its depiction of early twentieth-century clothing choices. It serves as a visual testament to both personal identity and historical context. Preserved through time, this cigar card from "History of Cuba" by Geografico Universal is not merely an artifact but rather a window into an important chapter in North and Central American history. It reminds us of individuals like Colonel Jose Ximenez de Sandoval who played crucial roles within their respective countries' struggles for independence and sovereignty.
