EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of departure of Princess Alice, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, and her new husband, Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt, as they embark on their honeymoon in 1862. The Royal couple, dressed in their finest attire, are seen waving from the window of their horse-drawn carriage, surrounded by footmen and bystanders. The scene takes place at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, England, which was selected by the Queen for the honeymoon due to its beautiful situation. The stay at the residence of Colonel and Lady Katherine Vernon Harcourt at St. Clare was brief, as the Prince and Princess returned to Osborne just a few days later. It is mentioned in the Illustrated London News that the couple intended to reside at Frogmore and Clarence House in St. James's, which had been placed at their disposal by the Queen. The photograph, engraved from the original, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and elegance of the royal wedding and honeymoon, with the horses and footmen adding to the sense of occasion. The image, reminiscent of the 19th century, transports us back in time to this significant moment in British monarchist history.
