Ocean liner RMS Mauretania, 20th century

Ocean liner RMS Mauretania, 20th century. The Mauretania was built for the Cunard Line by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Wallsend on the Tyne. Launched in 1906, the Mauretania operated on the transatlantic route to New York, holding the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing from 1909 until 1929. She served as a troopship during World War I, her speed enabling her to avoid falling prey to German u-boats. Mauretania was retired in 1934 after Cunard merged with the White Star Line and the 81, 000 ton Queen Mary entered service. She was scrapped the following year

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Ocean liner RMS Mauretania, a true icon of the 20th century. Built by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Wallsend on the Tyne and launched in 1906, this remarkable vessel operated on the transatlantic route to New York for many years. Renowned for her speed and elegance, she held the prestigious Blue Riband title for the fastest crossing from 1909 until 1929. During World War I, Mauretania played a vital role as a troopship, utilizing her impressive speed to evade German u-boats. Her contribution was invaluable in ensuring safe transportation during such turbulent times. However, with Cunard's merger with White Star Line and the introduction of Queen Mary in 1934, Mauretania gracefully retired from service. The following year saw her being dismantled and scrapped. This print not only captures an extraordinary piece of maritime history but also represents an era when ocean liners were synonymous with luxury travel and grandeur. The image portrays Mauretania's large size and distinctive funnel against a backdrop of serene blue waters—a testament to human engineering prowess combined with nature's vastness. Preserved by AccuSoft Inc. , this artwork serves as a reminder of our fascination with transport innovation throughout history while paying homage to those who sailed aboard this magnificent ship across treacherous seas towards new horizons.
