The Somerset Light Infantry. The Desperate Landing at Aboukir Bay, 1801, (1939). The Battle of Abukir of 8 March 1801 was fought at Abu Qir on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, near the Nile Delta. The British came under attack from French field guns while landing, with 130 killed and 600 wounded or missing. They went on to secure the position and the French withdrew, losing at least 300 dead, as well as heavy artillery pieces.
