"The Coliseum, Rome", by F.L. Bridell in the Royal Academy Exhibition, 1860. Creator: Thomas Gilks. "The Coliseum, Rome", by F.L. Bridell in the Royal Academy Exhibition, 1860. Creator: Thomas Gilks

"The Coliseum, Rome", by F.L. Bridell in the Royal Academy Exhibition, 1860. Engraving of a painting. This vast arena, constructed for the indulgence of brutal appetites, covers an area of six English acres, and such was the amount of means which the Emperors had under their power that it was constructed in the course of two years and nine months, and that, in spite of the ravages of time and the hands, ancient and modem, which have despoiled it for its materials, enough of it still survives to tell of the original plan, and to give an idea of the programme of the barbarous entertainments which were enacted within it. There it stands, whilst many a nobler edifice has gone to ruin...Mr. Bridell has produced a striking view of this colossal structure of ill fame, which is rendered doubly impressive by being represented, under the cold, bluish light of the moon, in a stormy or threatening sky. There it scowls like a nightmare, a hideous vision of past crime amongst a people who, from having been the tyrants and oppressors of the world, are now themselves oppressed, degraded, and objects of mingled pity and scorn to surrounding nations'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Coliseum, Rome," a captivating masterpiece by F.L. Bridell, was showcased at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1860. This engraving, created by Thomas Gilks, offers a hauntingly beautiful depiction of the ancient amphitheater that once served as a stage for the indulgence of brutal Roman appetites. Covering an expansive six English acres, the Coliseum's construction was a testament to the immense power and wealth of the Roman emperors. Despite the passage of time and the relentless hands that have plundered it for materials, enough of this colossal structure remains to provide a glimpse into its original design and to evoke the gruesome spectacles that once unfolded within its walls. The moonlit scene rendered by Bridell is a striking contrast to the infamous history of the Coliseum. The cold, bluish light casts an ominous glow over the structure, which appears as a nightmarish vision of past atrocities amidst a people who, having once ruled the world with tyranny and oppression, now find themselves oppressed, degraded, and the subject of pity and scorn from neighboring nations. Gilks' engraving, as described in the Illustrated London News in 1860, captures the essence of the Coliseum's dark past, transforming it into a powerful and thought-provoking work of art. The stormy or threatening sky only adds to the sense of foreboding, making this a truly impressive and memorable representation of the infamous amphitheater.
