View of Castel Gandolfo, c. 1870s. Creator: Myles Birket Foster (British, 1825-1899)

View of Castel Gandolfo, c. 1870s. In his watercolours, Foster depicted an idealized life in rural England. His work was appreciated as Pre- Raphaelite in its intricate detail, but was without the harsh colour and unorthodox subjects that made the Brotherhood controversial. Fosters watercolours proved enormously appealing to the Victorians. Each new work was eagerly anticipated, and colour lithographs after his watercolours helped popularize his imagery. While the English countryside was the inspiration for much of his work, he traveled abroad regularly, and in the 1870s, he made several trips to Italy. A view of peasants picnicking at the gates of Castel Gandolfo overlooking Lake Albano is the subject of this watercolour

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Myles Birket Foster's "View of Castel Gandolfo" from the 1870s. Known for his idyllic depictions of rural England, Foster's watercolours were highly regarded for their intricate detail and Pre-Raphaelite style. Unlike the controversial subjects and vibrant colors that characterized the Brotherhood, Foster's work offered a more serene and traditional approach. The Victorians eagerly awaited each new creation by Foster, whose imagery became immensely popular thanks to color lithographs based on his watercolours. While he drew inspiration primarily from the English countryside, he also embarked on regular trips abroad. In the 1870s, Italy beckoned him several times. In this particular artwork, we are treated to a delightful scene at Castel Gandolfo overlooking Lake Albano in Italy. The focus is on peasants enjoying a leisurely picnic near its gates. With meticulous attention to detail, Foster transports us into this picturesque setting where nature blends harmoniously with human activity. Heritage Art/Heritage Images presents this remarkable print as part of their collection celebrating British heritage artistry from the 19th century. It serves as a testament to Myles Birket Foster's talent and his ability to capture moments of tranquility amidst breathtaking landscapes both at home and abroad.
