EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two exquisite Wedgwood mugs designed by the renowned artist Eric Ravilious in 1944. The identity of the creator behind this remarkable photograph remains unknown, but their talent for capturing the beauty and craftsmanship of these mugs is evident. The first mug depicted is a Wedgwood Commemorations piece, featuring an enchanting design that pays homage to Etruria 1730 and Barlaston 1940. This serves as a reminder of the rich history associated with Wedgwood ceramics, which originated at the Etruria Works factory in Stoke-on-Trent back in 1769. However, production was later shifted to a modern facility built amidst picturesque rural surroundings in Barlaston between 1938 and 1940. The second mug showcased is an Edward VIII Coronation mug dated from 1937. King Edward VIII's short reign lasted only from January to December of that year before his abdication. Despite his departure from the throne, preparations had already been underway for his coronation at Westminster Abbey on May 12th, resulting in various commemorative items like this mug being produced and sold as souvenirs. This print not only captures these stunning ceramic pieces but also offers insight into British social history during the mid-20th century. It reminds us of how objects like these mugs can serve as collectible mementos representing significant moments in time. With its vibrant colors and historical significance, this photograph truly encapsulates both artistic beauty and cultural heritage.
