Wilson, Bowers, and Cherry-Garrard on Their Return from Cape Crozier, 1 August 1911, (1913)

Wilson, Bowers, and Cherry-Garrard on Their Return from Cape Crozier, 1 August 1911, (1913). Doctor and naturalist Edward Wilson (1872-1912), Lieutenant Henry Birdie Bowers (1883-1912) and zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard (1886-1959) after their journey to Cape Crozier to collect Emperor Penguin eggs. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the triumphant return of three brave explorers from their arduous journey to Cape Crozier in August 1911. Pictured here are Doctor and naturalist Edward Wilson, Lieutenant Henry Birdie Bowers, and zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard, who embarked on this perilous expedition as part of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition. The Terra Nova Expedition was a remarkable scientific endeavor that aimed to explore the uncharted territories of Antarctica while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. This diverse team consisted of experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. Unfortunately for Scott and his team, upon reaching their ultimate goal on January 17th, 1912 – the geographic South Pole – they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, Scott and his remaining companions perished at the end of March. Their bodies were eventually found eight months later along with their poignant diaries which revealed both their unwavering determination and heartbreaking struggle against nature's harsh forces. This historic photograph serves as a testament to these courageous men who risked everything in pursuit of knowledge and exploration. It stands as a reminder not only of their extraordinary achievements but also of the unforgiving power that Mother Nature holds over those who dare challenge her icy domain.
