EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the Odeon Cinema, located in Edgware Road, Marble Arch, City of Westminster, Greater London. The image showcases the view from the stalls seating area towards the curved screen in the auditorium. Originally opened in 1967 as part of a larger development project that included shops and an office tower, this cinema replaced its predecessor, known as Regal Cinema (later renamed Odeon Cinema), which had occupied the same site. Over time, it became a beloved destination for movie enthusiasts seeking immersive experiences. In 1996, to accommodate growing demand and evolving technology, the original auditorium was divided into five screens. However, despite its popularity and rich history within London's cinematic landscape, this iconic venue sadly closed its doors in 2016 before being demolished. Through this photograph by Norman Walley commissioned by Historic England, we are transported back to a time when film screenings were eagerly anticipated events filled with anticipation and excitement. The image perfectly encapsulates both nostalgia for classic cinema architecture and a sense of loss for what once stood proudly on this spot. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time forevermore, we are reminded of how places like these hold cherished memories for countless individuals who sought solace or inspiration within their walls.
