EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning painting, titled "The Holy Family with the Infant St John," is a masterpiece by the German artist Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779). Created in 1765, this work of art is a prime example of the artist's exceptional skill in capturing the warmth and tenderness of family relationships, as well as his profound understanding of religious themes. Mengs' depiction of the Holy Family - Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus - is both serene and intimate. The young St. John the Baptist, who gazes adoringly at the infant Jesus, adds a sense of wonder and reverence to the scene. The naturalistic setting and the soft, warm colors further enhance the emotional depth of the painting. Originally part of the Spanish Royal Collection, "The Holy Family with the Infant St John" was captured during the Peninsular War in 1813, when the Duke of Wellington's troops entered the city of Vitoria in Spain. The painting was later acquired by the 6th Duke of Devonshire and is now on display at Apsley House in London, a historic house museum and the London residence of the Duke of Wellington. This painting is a testament to Mengs' artistic genius and his ability to evoke deep emotions through his use of color, composition, and subject matter. It continues to captivate viewers with its beauty and spiritual resonance, making it an invaluable addition to the art collection at Apsley House and a cherished piece of artistic and historical heritage.
