Operation Rich Man JLP01_08_062435

COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. A RAF officer, surrounded by communications equipment, standing on the roof of Coventry Cathedral during the lowering of the 80ft bronze spire.
The photograph was taken during Operation Rich Man a joint project involving Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff. This involved a RAF Belvedere helicopter hoisting in to place the 80ft bronze spire on to the new cathedral. The part of the operation to lower the 1/2 ton cross that sits on top of the spire had to be postponed due to windy conditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Coventry Cathedral during Operation Rich Man. The image showcases a distinguished RAF officer, surrounded by an array of communications equipment, standing proudly on the roof of the cathedral. His presence symbolizes the collaboration between Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff in this joint project. The focal point of this operation was the lowering of an impressive 80ft bronze spire onto the new cathedral. This extraordinary task required precision and expertise, as demonstrated by the RAF Belvedere helicopter that hoisted it into place. However, Mother Nature had her own plans as windy conditions forced a postponement in lowering the 1/2 ton cross atop the spire. The photograph provides a glimpse into both history and progress. It transports us back to Coventry's bustling construction site in the 1960s, where dedicated individuals worked tirelessly to bring their vision to life. The juxtaposition between ancient traditions represented by Coventry Cathedral and modern technology showcased through communication equipment is striking. As we admire this remarkable image from A© Historic England Archive, we are reminded not only of human ingenuity but also our ability to overcome challenges together. It serves as a testament to teamwork and determination while capturing an unforgettable moment in time at one of Britain's most iconic landmarks.
