EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of transformation at Graythorp Dry Dock in Hartlepool, as an oil rig prepares for its move out to sea. In this image, taken in June 1974, the basin has been flooded, and the permanent dock gates have been removed. The Laing Offshore Graythorp project, an engineering feat of the time, involved the development of the former shipyard at Graythorp Dock into a base for constructing oil platforms. The innovative design of the dock included the construction of permanent dock gates consisting of hollow rectangular concrete caissons, which rested on a sill between two sets of sand-filled cofferdams. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the process of constructing and floating out an oil platform from the dock. The atmosphere is filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement as the rig, a testament to the advanced engineering and construction techniques of the era, prepares for its journey to the North Sea. The water reflects the grey skies above, adding to the sense of industry and determination that characterized the oil and gas industry during this period. This photograph is a valuable addition to the Historic England Archive, providing a snapshot of the industrial history of Hartlepool and the broader context of the North Sea oil and gas industry. It serves as a reminder of the ingenuity and engineering prowess that went into constructing the offshore installations that continue to provide energy to the UK and beyond.
