EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a series of extraordinary events from the life of Saint Catherine of Siena. In the center, we see Catharina, a virgin and Dominican Tertiary, kneeling before a crucifix as she receives the stigmata - wounds mirroring those of Christ. Lines connect her body to the wounds on the crucifix, symbolizing her deep spiritual connection with Jesus. To the left, two sisters tenderly support Catharina as she succumbs to this divine experience. On the right side of the image, a possessed woman writhes on the floor while her husband desperately tries to restrain her. With a powerful blessing gesture, Catharina redeems this tormented soul from her demons. In another scene depicted in this print, Pope Gregory XI returns to Italy accompanied by his retinue after an encounter with St. Catherine during his visit to Avignon. Along their journey back to Rome, they meet St. Catherine and another member of Domenicanes. The margin provides explanations in Latin for each performance portrayed in this ninth print from a remarkable series dedicated to Saint Catherine's life and wonders. Created by Pieter de Jode I in 1597 using paper engraving techniques, this artwork measures 252 mm in height and 286 mm in width. It is part of Liszt Collection's extensive collection but should not be used for commercial purposes without permission.
