This print showcases the intricate beauty of a Hodgepodge leaf from the Natural History Ensemble no. 7. The leaf is adorned with an enchanting array of animals and plants, ranging from insects like dragonflies and flies to a delicate spider, beans, centipedes, fruits, flowers, and even a shrimp. Each element is meticulously illustrated with remarkable detail. Numbered at the top right as 7, this artwork forms part of the seventh album containing drawings of reptiles, amphibians, and various natural history ensembles. Created between 1596 and 1610 by Elias Verhulst or someone attributed to him, these watercolors were commissioned by Emperor Rudolf II during that period. The piece measures approximately 160 mm in height and 248 mm in width. It was crafted using paper as its canvas along with pencil sketches enhanced by chalk accents.
